What audiences you speak for?
Nonprofits, conscious entrepreneurs/capitalists, professional women 50+ who are seeking more meaning and purpose.
What led you to this career?
After 30 great years in the radio industry, I had a nagging and persistent desire to make a difference to bigger groups and in bigger ways. I felt I could make a difference through speaking.
What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?
Leveraging AI in an efficient AND ethical way.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Giant pages of graph paper! I plot out all my projects for easy tracking. I know there are tools online for this, but something about the tactical and creative task of choosing colored post-it notes to earmark current projects and strategies works for me. Every week I study it and can quickly see what my priorities are for the week.
Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
Probably Marcus Buckingham, the co-author with Don Clifton of Now Discover Your Strengths, and author of the 2022 release, Love + Work. Marcus and Don did the research that became StrengthsFinders, now CliftonStrengths. Knowing and using my strengths, with a lot of help from Candace and Gary at CoreClarity, has helped me grow professionally and personally.
Seth Godin and Simon Sinek have also had a big influence on me.
What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?
Investing in training programs, but not spending the money to implement what I learned.
I made this mistake a few times before I realized that I was wasting money. Better to take one quality training, then invest in implementation rather than keep taking new trainings until the last is in action.
What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
Giving two TEDxSMU Talks! The first time, I pitched them. The second time, they asked me. What an honor!
What being a member of NSA-NT means to you:
Having access to great people and content has helped me grow in so many ways. I’ve met wonderful people who are also experts in a wide variety of subjects. Though I rarely attend meetings, I still learn from the various other programs and resources that they share.
Something personal you want us to know- can be about family, a vacation, a favorite food- anything you care to share.
I remember perfectly well the first big vacation I took. My mother and I went to Hawaii, via San Francisco, returning through Las Vegas. After checking into our hotel in Waikiki, we headed to the bar, lured by the sound of Tiny Bubbles floating out. The bartender introduced us to an island drink favorite, Chi Chi! It tasted like a coconut malt! I was only 20 at the time, without much experience with alcohol. Because it tasted so yummy, I quickly downed one then two. By 7pm I was laid out on my bed, struggling to stop the room from spinning. My mother was gracious and caring, trying to calm my horror at getting drunk with my mother. It was to be the first of many trips we would enjoy.
